God blessed Noah and his children. He
said to them, 'Be
fruitful and multiply, and
fill the earth.
Vayevarech Elohim et-Noach ve'et-banav vayomer
lahem peru urevu umil'u et-ha'arets.

וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶת־נֹ֖חַ
וְאֶת־בָּנָ֑יו וַיֹּ֧אמֶר לָהֶ֛ם פְּר֥וּ
וּרְב֖וּ וּמִלְא֥וּ אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
|
9:2
|
There shall be a fear and dread of you
instilled in all the wild beasts of the
earth, and all the birds of the sky, in
all that will walk the land, and in all
the fish of the sea. I have placed them
in your hands.
Umora'achem vechitchem yihyeh al kol-chayat
ha'arets ve'al kol-of hashamayim bechol
asher tirmos ha'adamah uvechol-degey
hayam beyedchem nitanu.

וּמוֹרַאֲכֶ֤ם וְחִתְּכֶם֙ יִֽהְיֶ֔ה עַ֚ל
כָּל־חַיַּ֣ת הָאָ֔רֶץ וְעַ֖ל כָּל־ע֣וֹף
הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם בְּכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּרְמֹ֧שׂ
הָֽאֲדָמָ֛ה וּֽבְכָל־דְּגֵ֥י הַיָּ֖ם
בְּיֶדְכֶ֥ם נִתָּֽנוּ׃

9:3
|
'Every moving thing that lives shall be
to you as food. Like plant vegetation,
I have [now] given you everything.
Kol-remes asher hu-chay lachem yihyeh
le-ochlah keyerek esev natati lachem
et-kol.
|
כָּל־רֶ֙מֶשׂ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הוּא־חַ֔י לָכֶ֥ם
יִהְיֶ֖ה לְאָכְלָ֑ה כְּיֶ֣רֶק עֵ֔שֶׂב
נָתַ֥תִּי לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־כֹּֽל׃

9:4
|
But nevertheless, you may not eat flesh
of a creature that is still
alive.
Ach-basar benafsho damo lo tochelu.
|
אַךְ־בָּשָׂ֕ר בְּנַפְשׁ֥וֹ דָמ֖וֹ לֹ֥א
תֹאכֵֽלוּ׃
|
9:5
|
'Only of the blood of
your own lives will I demand an account.
I will demand [such] an account from the
hand of every wild beast. From the hand
of man - [even] from the hand of a man's
own brother - I will demand an account
of [every] human life.
Ve'ach et-dimchem lenafshoteychem edrosh
miyad kol-chayah edreshenu umiyad
ha'adam miyad ish achiv edrosh et-nefesh
ha'adam.

וְאַ֨ךְ אֶת־דִּמְכֶ֤ם לְנַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶם֙
אֶדְרֹ֔שׁ מִיַּ֥ד כָּל־חַיָּ֖ה
אֶדְרְשֶׁ֑נּוּ וּמִיַּ֣ד הָֽאָדָ֗ם
מִיַּד֙ אִ֣ישׁ אָחִ֔יו אֶדְרֹ֖שׁ
אֶת־נֶ֥פֶשׁ הָֽאָדָֽם׃

9:6
|
He who spills human blood shall have his
own blood spilled by man, for God made man with
His own image.
Shofech dam ha'adam ba'adam damo yishafech ki
betselem Elohim asah et-ha'adam.
|
שֹׁפֵךְ֙ דַּ֣ם הָֽאָדָ֔ם בָּֽאָדָ֖ם דָּמ֣וֹ
יִשָּׁפֵ֑ךְ כִּ֚י בְּצֶ֣לֶם אֱלֹהִ֔ים
עָשָׂ֖ה אֶת־הָאָדָֽם׃
|
9:7
|
'Now be fruitful and multiply, swarm all
over the earth and become populous on
it.'
Ve'atem peru urevu shirtsu va'arets urevu-vah.
|
וְאַתֶּ֖ם פְּר֣וּ וּרְב֑וּ שִׁרְצ֥וּ בָאָ֖רֶץ
וּרְבוּ־בָֽהּ׃ (ס)

9:8
|
God said to Noah and his sons with him,
Vayomer Elohim el-Noach ve'el banav ito lemor.
|
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־נֹ֔חַ וְאֶל־בָּנָ֥יו
אִתּ֖וֹ לֵאמֹֽר׃
|
9:9
|
'I Myself am making a covenant with you
and with your offspring after you.
Va'ani hineni mekim et-beriti itechem
ve'et-zar'achem achareychem.
|
וַאֲנִ֕י הִנְנִ֥י מֵקִ֛ים אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י
אִתְּכֶ֑ם וְאֶֽת־זַרְעֲכֶ֖ם
אַֽחֲרֵיכֶֽם׃
|
9:10
|
[It will also include] every living
creature that is with you among the
birds, the livestock, and all the beasts
of the earth with you - all who left the
ark, including every animal on earth.
Ve'et kol-nefesh hachayah asher itchem ba'of
babehemah uvechol-chayat ha'arets
itechem mikol yot'sey hatevah lechol
chayat ha'arets.
|
וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־נֶ֤פֶשׁ הַֽחַיָּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר
אִתְּכֶ֔ם בָּע֧וֹף בַּבְּהֵמָ֛ה
וּֽבְכָל־חַיַּ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ אִתְּכֶ֑ם
מִכֹּל֙ יֹצְאֵ֣י הַתֵּבָ֔ה לְכֹ֖ל
חַיַּ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃
|
9:11
|
I will make My covenant with you, and
all life will never be cut short by the
waters of a flood. There will never
again be a flood to destroy the earth.'
Vahakimoti et-beriti itchem velo-yikaret
kol-basar od mimey hamabul velo-yihyeh
od mabul leshachet ha'arets.
|
וַהֲקִמֹתִ֤י אֶת־בְּרִיתִי֙ אִתְּכֶ֔ם
וְלֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֧ת כָּל־בָּשָׂ֛ר ע֖וֹד
מִמֵּ֣י הַמַּבּ֑וּל וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֥ה
ע֛וֹד מַבּ֖וּל לְשַׁחֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃
|
9:12
|
God said, 'This is the sign that I am
providing for the covenant between Me,
you, and every living creature that is
with you, for everlasting generations:
Vayomer Elohim zot ot-habrit asher-ani noten
beyni uveyneychem uveyn kol-nefesh
chayah asher itchem ledorot olam.
|
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֗ים זֹ֤את אֽוֹת־הַבְּרִית֙
אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֣י נֹתֵ֗ן בֵּינִי֙
וּבֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם וּבֵ֛ין כָּל־נֶ֥פֶשׁ
חַיָּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתְּכֶ֑ם לְדֹרֹ֖ת
עוֹלָֽם׃

9:13
|
I have placed My rainbow in the clouds,
and it shall be a sign of the covenant
between Me and the earth.
Et-kashti natati be'anan vehayetah le'ot berit
beyni uveyn ha'arets.
|
אֶת־קַשְׁתִּ֕י נָתַ֖תִּי בֶּֽעָנָ֑ן
וְהָֽיְתָה֙ לְא֣וֹת בְּרִ֔ית בֵּינִ֖י
וּבֵ֥ין הָאָֽרֶץ׃
|
9:14
|
When I bring clouds over the earth, the
rainbow will be seen among the clouds.
Vehayah be'aneni anan al-ha'arets venir'atah
hakeshet be'anan.
|
וְהָיָ֕ה בְּעַֽנְנִ֥י עָנָ֖ן עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
וְנִרְאֲתָ֥ה הַקֶּ֖שֶׁת בֶּעָנָֽן׃
|
9:15
|
I will then recall the covenant that
exists between Me, you and every living
soul in all flesh.
Vezacharti et-briti asher beyni uveyneychem
uveyn kol-nefesh chayah bechol-basar
velo-yihyeh od hamayim lemabul leshachet
kol-basar.
|
וְזָכַרְתִּ֣י אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֤ר בֵּינִי֙
וּבֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם וּבֵ֛ין כָּל־נֶ֥פֶשׁ
חַיָּ֖ה בְּכָל־בָּשָׂ֑ר וְלֹֽא־יִֽהְיֶ֨ה
ע֤וֹד הַמַּ֙יִם֙ לְמַבּ֔וּל לְשַׁחֵ֖ת
כָּל־בָּשָֽׂר׃
|
9:16
|
The rainbow will be in the clouds, and I
will see it to recall the eternal
covenant between God and every living
soul in all flesh that is on the earth.'
Vehayetah hakeshet be'anan ure'itiha lizkor
berit olam beyn Elohim uveyn kol-nefesh
chayah bechol-basar asher al-ha'arets.

וְהָיְתָ֥ה הַקֶּ֖שֶׁת בֶּֽעָנָ֑ן
וּרְאִיתִ֗יהָ לִזְכֹּר֙ בְּרִ֣ית עוֹלָ֔ם
בֵּ֣ין אֱלֹהִ֔ים וּבֵין֙ כָּל־נֶ֣פֶשׁ
חַיָּ֔ה בְּכָל־בָּשָׂ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר
עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

9:17
|
God said to Noah, 'This is the sign of
the covenant that I have made between Me
and all flesh on the earth.'
Vayomer Elohim el-Noach zot ot-habrit asher
hakimoti beyni uveyn kol-basar asher
al-ha'arets.
|
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־נֹ֑חַ זֹ֤את
אֽוֹת־הַבְּרִית֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֲקִמֹ֔תִי
בֵּינִ֕י וּבֵ֥ין כָּל־בָּשָׂ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר
עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (פ)

9:18
|
The sons of Noah who emerged from the
ark were Shem, Ham and Yefeth. Ham was
the father of Canaan.
Vayihyu veney-Noach hayotse'im min-hatevah
Shem veCham vaYafet veCham hu avi
Chena'an.
|
וַיִּֽהְי֣וּ בְנֵי־נֹ֗חַ הַיֹּֽצְאִים֙
מִן־הַתֵּבָ֔ה שֵׁ֖ם וְחָ֣ם וָיָ֑פֶת
וְחָ֕ם ה֖וּא אֲבִ֥י כְנָֽעַן׃
|
9:19
|
These three were Noah's sons, and from
them, the whole world was repopulated.
Shloshah eleh beney-Noach ume'eleh naftsah
chol-ha'arets.
|
שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵי־נֹ֑חַ וּמֵאֵ֖לֶּה
נָֽפְצָ֥ה כָל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
|
9:20
|
Noah began to be a man of the soil, and
he planted a vineyard.
Vayachel Noach ish ha'adamah vayita karem.
|
וַיָּ֥חֶל נֹ֖חַ אִ֣ישׁ הָֽאֲדָמָ֑ה וַיִּטַּ֖ע
כָּֽרֶם׃
|
9:21
|
He drank some of the wine, making
himself drunk, and uncovered himself in
the tent.
Vayesht min-hayayin vayishkar vayitgal betoch
aholoh.
|
וַיֵּ֥שְׁתְּ מִן־הַיַּ֖יִן וַיִּשְׁכָּ֑ר
וַיִּתְגַּ֖ל בְּת֥וֹךְ אָהֳלֹֽה׃
|
9:22
|
Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his
father naked, and he told it to his two
brothers outside.
Vayar Cham avi Chena'an et ervat aviv vayaged
lishney-echav bachuts.
|
וַיַּ֗רְא חָ֚ם אֲבִ֣י כְנַ֔עַן אֵ֖ת עֶרְוַ֣ת
אָבִ֑יו וַיַּגֵּ֥ד לִשְׁנֵֽי־אֶחָ֖יו
בַּחֽוּץ׃

9:23
|
Shem and Yefeth took a cloak and placed
it on both their shoulders. Walking
backwards, they then covered their
father's nakedness. They faced away from
him and did not see their father naked.
Vayikach Shem vaYefet et-hasimlah vayasimu
al-shchem shneyhem vayelchu achoranit
vayechasu et ervat avihem ufneyhem
achoranit ve'ervat avihem lo ra'u.

וַיִּקַּח֩ שֵׁ֨ם וָיֶ֜פֶת אֶת־הַשִּׂמְלָ֗ה
וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ עַל־שְׁכֶ֣ם שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם
וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ אֲחֹ֣רַנִּ֔ית וַיְכַסּ֕וּ
אֵ֖ת עֶרְוַ֣ת אֲבִיהֶ֑ם וּפְנֵיהֶם֙
אֲחֹ֣רַנִּ֔ית וְעֶרְוַ֥ת אֲבִיהֶ֖ם לֹ֥א
רָאֽוּ׃

9:24
|
Noah awoke from his wine-induced sleep,
and he realized what his youngest
son had
done to him.
Vayikets Noach miyeno
vayeda et asher-asah lo beno hakatan.
|
וַיִּ֥יקֶץ נֹ֖חַ מִיֵּינ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֕דַע אֵ֛ת
אֲשֶׁר־עָ֥שָׂה־ל֖וֹ בְּנ֥וֹ הַקָּטָֽן׃
|
9:25
|
He said, 'Cursed
is Canaan! He shall be a
slave's slave to his brothers!'
Vayomer arur Kena'an eved avadim yihyeh
le'echav.
|
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אָר֣וּר כְּנָ֑עַן עֶ֥בֶד עֲבָדִ֖ים
יִֽהְיֶ֥ה לְאֶחָֽיו׃
|
9:26
|
He then said, 'Blessed be God, the Lord
of Shem! Canaan shall be his slave!
Vayomer baruch Adonay Elohey Shem viyihi
Chena'an eved lamo.
|
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בָּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹ֣הֵי שֵׁ֑ם
וִיהִ֥י כְנַ֖עַן עֶ֥בֶד לָֽמוֹ׃
|
9:27
|
May God expand Yefeth,
but may He dwell in the tents of Shem.
Let Canaan be their slave!'
Yaft Elohim leYefet veyishkon be'aholey-Shem
viyihi Chena'an eved lamo.
|
יַ֤פְתְּ אֱלֹהִים֙ לְיֶ֔פֶת וְיִשְׁכֹּ֖ן
בְּאָֽהֳלֵי־שֵׁ֑ם וִיהִ֥י כְנַ֖עַן
עֶ֥בֶד לָֽמוֹ׃

9:28
|
Noah lived 350 years after the flood.
Vayechi Noach achar hamabul shlosh me'ot
shanah vachamishim shanah.
|
וַֽיְחִי־נֹ֖חַ אַחַ֣ר הַמַּבּ֑וּל שְׁלֹ֤שׁ
מֵאוֹת֙ שָׁנָ֔ה וַֽחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים שָׁנָֽה׃
|
9:29
|
All of Noah's days were 950 years, and
he died.
Vayehi kol-yemey-Noach tsha me'ot shanah
vachamishim shanah vayamot.
|
וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ כָּל־יְמֵי־נֹ֔חַ תְּשַׁ֤ע
מֵאוֹת֙ שָׁנָ֔ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה
וַיָּמֹֽת׃ (פ)
