Soon after this,
the Egyptian king's wine
steward and bakeroffended their
master, who was the king
of Egypt.

לַֽאֲדֹֽנֵיהֶ֖ם
לְמֶ֥לֶךְ מִצְרָֽיִם:

Pharaoh was incensed at
his two courtiers, the
chief steward and chief
baker,
Vayiktsof Par'oh al
shney sarisav al sar
hamashkim ve'al sar
ha'ofim.

בוַיִּקְצֹ֣ף פַּרְעֹ֔ה עַ֖ל שְׁנֵ֣י סָֽרִיסָ֑יו עַ֚ל שַׂ֣ר הַמַּשְׁקִ֔ים
וְעַ֖ל שַׂ֥ר
הָֽאוֹפִֽים:

|
and he had them
arrested. They were
placed in the house of
thecaptain
of the guard,
in the same dungeon
where Joseph was
imprisoned.
Vayiten otam bemishmar
beyt sar hatabachim
el-beyt hasohar mekom
asher Yosef asur sham.

גוַיִּתֵּ֨ן אֹתָ֜ם בְּמִשְׁמַ֗ר בֵּ֛ית שַׂ֥ר הַטַּבָּחִ֖ים אֶל־בֵּ֣ית

אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹסֵ֖ף אָס֥וּר

They were under arrest
for a long period of
time, and the captain
assigned Joseph to look
after them.

|
One night, the two of
them dreamed. The
Egyptian king's steward
and baker, who were
imprisoned in the
dungeon, each had a
dream that seemed to
have a special
meaning.

hamashkeh veha'ofeh

הוַיַּֽחַלְמוּ֩ חֲל֨וֹם שְׁנֵיהֶ֜ם אִ֤ישׁ חֲלֹמוֹ֙ בְּלַ֣יְלָה אֶחָ֔ד

חֲלֹמ֑וֹ הַמַּשְׁקֶ֣ה
וְהָֽאֹפֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙

When Joseph came to them
in the morning, he saw
that they were upset.
Vayavo aleyhem Yosef
baboker vayar otam
vehinam zo'afim.

ווַיָּבֹ֧א אֲלֵיהֶ֛ם יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַיַּ֣רְא אֹתָ֔ם וְהִנָּ֖ם
זֹֽעֲפִֽים:

|
He tried to find out
what was wrong with
Pharaoh's courtiers who
were his fellow
prisoners in his
master's house. 'Why do
you look so worried
today?' he asked.

זוַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל אֶת־סְרִיסֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אִתּ֧וֹ בְמִשְׁמַ֛ר בֵּ֥ית
אֲדֹנָ֖יו לֵאמֹ֑ר
מַדּ֛וּעַ פְּנֵיכֶ֥ם
רָעִ֖ים הַיּֽוֹם:

|
'We [each] had a dream,'
they replied, 'and there
is no one [here] to
interpret it.'
'Interpretations are
God's business,' replied
Joseph. 'If you want to,
tell me about [your
dreams].'

The chief steward
related his dream to
Joseph. 'In my dream,'
he said, 'there was a
grape vine right there
in front of me.
Vayesaper sar-hamashkim
et-chalomo le-Yosef
vayomer lo bachalomi
vehineh-gefen lefanay.

טוַיְסַפֵּ֧ר שַׂר־הַמַּשְׁקִ֛ים אֶת־חֲלֹמ֖וֹ לְיוֹסֵ֑ף וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ
בַּֽחֲלוֹמִ֕י
וְהִנֵּה־גֶ֖פֶן
לְפָנָֽי:

|
The vine had three
branches. As soon as its
buds formed, its
blossoms bloomed, and
its clusters ripened
into grapes.

יוּבַגֶּ֖פֶן שְׁלשָׁ֣ה שָֽׂרִיגִ֑ם וְהִ֤וא כְפֹרַ֨חַת֙ עָֽלְתָ֣ה נִצָּ֔הּ
הִבְשִׁ֥ילוּ
אַשְׁכְּלֹתֶ֖יהָ
עֲנָבִֽים:

|
Pharaoh's cup was in my
hand. I took the grapes
and squeezed them into
Pharaoh's cup. Then I
placed the cup in
Pharaoh's hand.'

יאוְכ֥וֹס פַּרְעֹ֖ה בְּיָדִ֑י וָֽאֶקַּ֣ח אֶת־הָֽעֲנָבִ֗ים וָֽאֶשְׂחַ֤ט
אֹתָם֙ אֶל־כּ֣וֹס
פַּרְעֹ֔ה וָֽאֶתֵּ֥ן
אֶת־הַכּ֖וֹס עַל־כַּ֥ף
פַּרְעֹֽה:

Joseph said to him,
'This is the
interpretation: The
three branches are three
days.

יבוַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ יוֹסֵ֔ף זֶ֖ה פִּתְרֹנ֑וֹ שְׁל֨שֶׁת֙ הַשָּׂ֣רִגִ֔ים
שְׁל֥שֶׁת יָמִ֖ים הֵֽם:

|
In three days, Pharaoh
will lift
your head and
give you back your
position. You will place
Pharaoh's cup in his
hand, just as you did
before, when you were
his steward.

יגבְּע֣וֹד | שְׁל֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים יִשָּׂ֤א פַרְעֹה֙ אֶת־רֹאשֶׁ֔ךָ
וַֽהֲשִֽׁיבְךָ֖
עַל־כַּנֶּ֑ךָ
וְנָֽתַתָּ֤
כוֹס־פַּרְעֹה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ
כַּמִּשְׁפָּט֙
הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר
הָיִ֖יתָ מַשְׁקֵֽהוּ:

|
'But when things go well
for you, just remember
that I was with you. Do
me a favor and say
something about me to
Pharaoh. Perhaps you
will be able to get me
out of this place.

ve'asita-na imadi chased
vehizkartani el-Par'oh
vehotsetani min-habayit
hazeh.

ידכִּ֧י אִם־זְכַרְתַּ֣נִי אִתְּךָ֗ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ יִ֣יטַב לָ֔ךְ
וְעָשִֽׂיתָ־נָּ֥א
עִמָּדִ֖י חָ֑סֶד
וְהִזְכַּרְתַּ֨נִי֙
אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה
וְהֽוֹצֵאתַ֖נִי
מִן־הַבַּ֥יִת הַזֶּֽה:

|
I was originally
kidnapped from the land
of the Hebrews, and when
I came here, I did not
do anything to deserve
being thrown in the
dungeon.'

|
The chief baker saw that
[Joseph] was able to
give a good
interpretation. He said
to Joseph, 'I also saw
myself in my dream.
There were three baskets
of fine
white bread on
my head.

af-ani bachalomi vehineh

טזוַיַּ֥רְא שַׂר־הָֽאֹפִ֖ים כִּ֣י ט֣וֹב פָּתָ֑ר וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף
אַף־אֲנִי֙ בַּֽחֲלוֹמִ֔י
וְהִנֵּ֗ה שְׁלשָׁ֛ה
סַלֵּ֥י חֹרִ֖י
עַל־רֹאשִֽׁי:

|
In the top basket, there
were all kinds of baked
goods that Pharaoh eats.
But birds were eating it
from the basket on my
head!'

יזוּבַסַּ֣ל הָֽעֶלְי֗וֹן מִכֹּ֛ל מַֽאֲכַ֥ל פַּרְעֹ֖ה מַֽעֲשֵׂ֣ה אֹפֶ֑ה
וְהָע֗וֹף אֹכֵ֥ל אֹתָ֛ם
מִן־הַסַּ֖ל מֵעַ֥ל
רֹאשִֽׁי:

|
Joseph replied, 'This is
its interpretation: The
three baskets are three
days.

יחוַיַּ֤עַן יוֹסֵף֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר זֶ֖ה פִּתְרֹנ֑וֹ שְׁל֨שֶׁת֙ הַסַּלִּ֔ים
שְׁל֥שֶׁת יָמִ֖ים הֵֽם:

|
In three days, Pharaoh
will lift your head -
right off your body! He
will hang you on a
gallows, and the birds
will eat your flesh.'

Last Reading
The third day was
Pharaoh's birthday, and
he made a feast for all
his servants. Among his
servants, he gave
special attention to
the chief wine steward
and the chief baker.
Vayehi bayom hashlishi
yom huledet et-Par'oh
vaya'as mishteh
lechol-avadav. Vayisa
et-rosh sar hamashkim
ve'et-rosh sar ha'ofim
betoch avadav.

כוַיְהִ֣י | בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י י֚וֹם הֻלֶּ֣דֶת אֶת־פַּרְעֹ֔ה
וַיַּ֥עַשׂ מִשְׁתֶּ֖ה
לְכָל־עֲבָדָ֑יו
וַיִּשָּׂ֞א אֶת־רֹ֣אשׁ |
שַׂ֣ר הַמַּשְׁקִ֗ים
וְאֶת־רֹ֛אשׁ שַׂ֥ר
הָֽאֹפִ֖ים בְּת֥וֹךְ
עֲבָדָֽיו:

|
He restored the chief
steward to his position,
and allowed him to place
the cup in Pharaoh's
hand.

כאוַיָּ֛שֶׁב אֶת־שַׂ֥ר הַמַּשְׁקִ֖ים עַל־מַשְׁקֵ֑הוּ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן הַכּ֖וֹס
עַל־כַּ֥ף פַּרְעֹֽה:

|
The chief baker,
however, was hanged,
just as Joseph had
predicted.
Ve'et sar ha'ofim talah

כבוְאֵ֛ת שַׂ֥ר הָֽאֹפִ֖ים תָּלָ֑ה כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר פָּתַ֛ר לָהֶ֖ם יוֹסֵֽף:

|
The chief steward did
not remember Joseph. He
forgot all about him.
