33:1

Jacob looked up and saw Esau approaching with 400 men. He divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two handmaids. 
Vayisa Ya'akov eynav vayar vehineh Esav ba ve'imo arba-me'ot ish vayachats et-hayeladim al-Leah ve'al-Rachel ve'al shtey hashfachot.

אוַיִּשָּׂ֨א יַֽעֲקֹ֜ב עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּרְא֙ וְהִנֵּ֣ה עֵשָׂ֣ו בָּ֔א וְעִמּ֕וֹ אַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּ֣חַץ אֶת־הַיְלָדִ֗ים עַל־לֵאָה֙ וְעַל־רָחֵ֔ל וְעַ֖ל שְׁתֵּ֥י הַשְּׁפָחֽוֹת:

33:2

He placed the handmaids and their children in front, Leah and their sons behind them, and Rachel and Joseph to the rear. 
Vayasem et-hashfachot ve'et-yaldeyhen rishonah ve'et Leah viladeyha acharonim ve'et-Rachel ve'et-Yosef acharonim.

בוַיָּ֧שֶׂם אֶת־הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת וְאֶת־יַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן רִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְאֶת־לֵאָ֤ה וִֽילָדֶ֨יהָ֙ אַֽחֲרֹנִ֔ים וְאֶת־רָחֵ֥ל וְאֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף אַֽחֲרֹנִֽים:

33:3

[Jacob] then went ahead of them, and he prostrated himself seven times as he approached his brother. 
Vehu avar lifneyhem vayishtachu artsah sheva pe'amim ad-gishto ad-achiv.

גוְה֖וּא עָבַ֣ר לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּ אַ֨רְצָה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע פְּעָמִ֔ים עַד־גִּשְׁתּ֖וֹ עַד־אָחִֽיו:

33:4

Esau ran to meet them. He hugged [Jacob], and throwing himself on his shoulders, kissed him. They [both] wept. 
Vayarats Esav likrato vayechabekehu vayipol al-tsavarav vayishakehu vayivku.

דוַיָּ֨רָץ עֵשָׂ֤ו לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־צַוָּארָ֖יו כתיב צוארו וַֹיִֹשָֹׁקֵֹ֑הֹוֹּ וַיִּבְכּֽוּ:

33:5

Esau looked up and saw the women and children. 'Who are these to you?' he asked.

'They are the children whom God has been kind enough to grant me,' replied [Jacob]. 
Vayisa et-eynav vayar et-hanashim ve'et-hayeladim vayomer mi-eleh lach vayomar hayeladim asher-chanan Elohim et-avdecha.

הוַיִּשָּׂ֣א אֶת־עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֤רְא אֶת־הַנָּשִׁים֙ וְאֶת־הַיְלָדִ֔ים וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מִי־אֵ֣לֶּה לָּ֑ךְ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר הַיְלָדִ֕ים אֲשֶׁר־חָנַ֥ן אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־עַבְדֶּֽךָ:

 

33:6

Fourth Reading
The handmaids approached along with their children, and [the women] bowed down. 
Vatigashan hashfachot henah veyaldeyhen vatishtachaveyna.

ווַתִּגַּ֧שְׁןָ הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת הֵ֥נָּה וְיַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן וַתִּשְׁתַּֽחֲוֶֽיןָ:

33:7

Leah and her children also approached and bowed down. Finally, Joseph and Rachel came forward and bowed down. 
Vatigash gam-Leah viladeyha vayishtachavu ve'achar nigash Yosef veRachel vayishtachavu.

זוַתִּגַּ֧שׁ גַּם־לֵאָ֛ה וִֽילָדֶ֖יהָ וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲו֑וּ וְאַחַ֗ר נִגַּ֥שׁ יוֹסֵ֛ף וְרָחֵ֖ל וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲוֽוּ:

33:8

'What did you have to do with that whole camp that came to greet me?' asked [Esau].

'It was to gain favor in your eyes,' replied [Jacob]. 
Vayomer mi lecha kol hamachaneh hazeh asher pagashti vayomer limtso-chen be'eyney adoni.

חוַיֹּ֕אמֶר מִ֥י לְךָ֛ כָּל־הַמַּֽחֲנֶ֥ה הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּגָ֑שְׁתִּי וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לִמְצֹא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי:

33:9

'I have plenty, my brother,' said Esau. 'Let what is yours remain yours.' 
Vayomer Esav yesh-li rav achi yehi lecha asher-lach.

טוַיֹּ֥אמֶר עֵשָׂ֖ו יֶשׁ־לִ֣י רָ֑ב אָחִ֕י יְהִ֥י לְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁר־לָֽךְ:

 

33:10

'Please! No!' said Jacob. 'If I have gained favor with you, please accept this gift from me. After all, seeing your face is like seeing the face of the Divine, you have received me so favorably. 
Vayomer Ya'akov al-na im-na matsati chen be'eyneycha velakachta minchati miyadi ki al-ken ra'iti faneycha kir'ot peney Elohim vatirtseni.

יוַיֹּ֣אמֶר יַֽעֲקֹ֗ב אַל־נָא֙ אִם־נָ֨א מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֥ מִנְחָתִ֖י מִיָּדִ֑י כִּ֣י עַל־כֵּ֞ן רָאִ֣יתִי פָנֶ֗יךָ כִּרְאֹ֛ת פְּנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַתִּרְצֵֽנִי:

33:11

Please accept my welcoming gift as it has been brought to you. God has been kind to me, and I have all [I need].' [Jacob thus] urged him, and [Esau finally] took it. 
Kach-na et-birchati asher huvat lach ki-chanani Elohim vechi yesh-li-chol vayiftsar-bo vayikach.

יאקַח־נָ֤א אֶת־בִּרְכָתִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֻבָ֣את לָ֔ךְ כִּֽי־חַנַּ֥נִי אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְכִ֣י יֶשׁ־לִי־כֹ֑ל וַיִּפְצַר־בּ֖וֹ וַיִּקָּֽח:

33:12

'Let's get going and move on,' said [Esau]. 'I will travel alongside you.' 
Vayomer nis'ah venelechah ve'elchah lenegdecha.

יבוַיֹּ֖אמֶר נִסְעָ֣ה וְנֵלֵ֑כָה וְאֵֽלְכָ֖ה לְנֶגְדֶּֽךָ:

33:13

'My lord,' replied Jacob, 'you know that the children are weak, and I have responsibility for the nursing sheep and cattle. If they are driven hard for even one day, all the sheep will die. 
Vayomer elav adoni yodea ki-hayeladim rakim vehatson vehabakar alot alay udefakum yom echad vametu kol-hatson.

יגוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו אֲדֹנִ֤י יֹדֵ֨עַ֙ כִּֽי־הַיְלָדִ֣ים רַכִּ֔ים וְהַצֹּ֥אן וְהַבָּקָ֖ר עָל֣וֹת עָלָ֑י וּדְפָקוּם֙ י֣וֹם אֶחָ֔ד וָמֵ֖תוּ כָּל־הַצֹּֽאן:

33:14

Please go ahead of me, my lord. I will lead my group slowly, following the pace of the work that I have ahead of me, and the pace of the children. I will eventually come to [you], my lord, in Seir.' 
Ya'avor-na adoni lifney avdo va'ani etnahalah le'iti leregel hamlachah asher-lefanay uleregel hayeladim ad asher-avo el-adoni Se'irah.

ידיַֽעֲבָר־נָ֥א אֲדֹנִ֖י לִפְנֵ֣י עַבְדּ֑וֹ וַֽאֲנִ֞י אֶתְנַֽהֲלָ֣ה לְאִטִּ֗י לְרֶ֨גֶל הַמְּלָאכָ֤ה אֲשֶׁר־לְפָנַי֙ וּלְרֶ֣גֶל הַיְלָדִ֔ים עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁר־אָבֹ֥א אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֖י שֵׂעִֽירָה:

33:15

'Let me put some of my people at your disposal,' said Esau.

'What for?' replied Jacob. 'Just let me remain on friendly terms with you.' 
Vayomer Esav atsigah-na imcha min-ha'am asher iti vayomer lamah zeh emtsa-chen be'eyney adoni.

טווַיֹּ֣אמֶר עֵשָׂ֔ו אַצִּֽיגָה־נָּ֣א עִמְּךָ֔ מִן־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתִּ֑י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לָ֣מָּה זֶּ֔ה אֶמְצָא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי:

33:16

On that day, Esau returned along the way to Seir. 
Vayashav bayom hahu Esav ledarko Se'irah.

טזוַיָּ֩שָׁב֩ בַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֥וּא עֵשָׂ֛ו לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ שֵׂעִֽירָה:

33:17

Jacob went to Sukkoth. There, he built himself a house, and made shelters for his livestock. He therefore named the place Sukkoth (Shelters). 
VeYa'akov nasa Sukotah vayiven lo bayit ulemiknehu asah sukot al-ken kara shem-hamakom Sukot.

יזוְיַֽעֲקֹב֙ נָסַ֣ע סֻכֹּ֔תָה וַיִּ֥בֶן ל֖וֹ בָּ֑יִת וּלְמִקְנֵ֨הוּ֙ עָשָׂ֣ה סֻכֹּ֔ת עַל־כֵּ֛ן קָרָ֥א שֵֽׁם־הַמָּק֖וֹם סֻכּֽוֹת:

33:18

When Jacob came from Padan Aram and entered the boundaries of Canaan, he arrived safely in the vicinity of Shechem. He set up camp in view of the city. 
Vayavo Ya'akov shalem ir Shchem asher be'erets Kena'an bevo'o miPadan Aram vayichan et-peney ha'ir.

יחוַיָּבֹא֩ יַֽעֲקֹ֨ב שָׁלֵ֜ם עִ֣יר שְׁכֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן בְּבֹא֖וֹ מִפַּדַּ֣ן אֲרָ֑ם וַיִּ֖חַן אֶת־פְּנֵ֥י הָעִֽיר:

 

33:19

He bought the piece of open land upon which he set up his tent for 100 kesitahs from the sons of Chamor, chief of Shechem. 
Vayiken et-chelkat hasadeh asher natah-sham aholo miyad beney-Chamor avi Shchem beme'ah ksitah.

יטוַיִּ֜קֶן אֶת־חֶלְקַ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָֽטָה־שָׁם֙ אָהֳל֔וֹ מִיַּ֥ד בְּנֵֽי־חֲמ֖וֹר אֲבִ֣י שְׁכֶ֑ם בְּמֵאָ֖ה קְשִׂיטָֽה:

33:20

He erected an altar there, and named it God-is-Israel's-Lord (El Elohey Yisrael). 
Vayatsev-sham mizbe'ach vayikra-lo El Elohey Yisra'el.

כוַיַּצֶּב־שָׁ֖ם מִזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּ֨קְרָא־ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ל אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:
