Jacob set off briskly, and
headed toward the land of the
people of the East.

אַ֥רְצָה בְנֵי־קֶֽדֶם:

|
[He came to a place] where he
saw a well in a field. Three
flocks of sheep were lying
beside it, since it was from
this well that the flocks were
watered. The top of the well was
covered with a large stone.
Vayar vehineh ve'er basadeh
vehineh-sham shloshah edrey-tson
rovtsim aleyha ki min-habe'er
hahi yashku ha'adarim veha'even
gedolah al-pi habe'er.

בוַיַּ֞רְא וְהִנֵּ֧ה בְאֵ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה
וְהִנֵּה־שָׁ֞ם שְׁלשָׁ֤ה
עֶדְרֵי־צֹאן֙ רֹֽבְצִ֣ים
עָלֶ֔יהָ כִּ֚י מִן־הַבְּאֵ֣ר
הַהִ֔וא יַשְׁק֖וּ הָֽעֲדָרִ֑ים
וְהָאֶ֥בֶן גְּדֹלָ֖ה עַל־פִּ֥י
הַבְּאֵֽר:

|
When all the flocks would come
together there, [the shepherds]
would roll the stone from the
top of the well and water the
sheep. Then they would replace
the stone on the well.

veheshivu et-ha'even al-pi

גוְנֶֽאֶסְפוּ־שָׁ֣מָּה כָל־הָֽעֲדָרִ֗ים

[Some shepherds were there.]
'From where do you come,
brothers?' asked Jacob.
'We are from Charan.'

'Do you know Nachor's grandson,
Laban?'
'We know him.'

הוַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם הַיְדַעְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־לָבָ֣ן
בֶּן־נָח֑וֹר וַיֹּֽאמְר֖וּ
יָדָֽעְנוּ:

29:6
|
'Is he doing well?'
Well enough! Here's his daughter
Rachel, coming with the sheep.'

ווַיֹּ֥אמֶר לָהֶ֖ם הֲשָׁל֣וֹם ל֑וֹ

עִם־הַצֹּֽאן:

|
'But it's still the middle of
the day. It's not yet time to
bring the livestock together.
Why not water the sheep and go
on grazing?'

זוַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֵ֥ן עוֹד֙ הַיּ֣וֹם גָּד֔וֹל
לֹא־עֵ֖ת הֵֽאָסֵ֣ף הַמִּקְנֶ֑ה
הַשְׁק֥וּ הַצֹּ֖אן וּלְכ֥וּ
רְעֽוּ:

|
'We can't until all the flocks
have come together. [All of us]
then roll the stone from the top
of the well. Only then can we
water the sheep.'
Vayomeru lo nuchal ad asher
ye'asfu kol-ha'adarim vegalelu
et-ha'even me'al pi habe'er
vehishkinu hatson.

While he was still conversing
with them, Rachel appeared with
her father's sheep. She was the
shepherdess.

טעוֹדֶ֖נּוּ מְדַבֵּ֣ר עִמָּ֑ם וְרָחֵ֣ל |

|
Jacob looked at his cousin
Rachel who was with his uncle
Laban's sheep. He stepped
forward, and rolled the stone
from the top of the well,
watering his uncle Laban's
sheep.
Vayehi ka'asher ra'ah Ya'akov
et-Rachel bat-Lavan achi imo
ve'et tson Lavan achi imo
vayigash Ya'akov vayagel

|
Jacob kissed Rachel and wept
aloud.
Vayishak Ya'akov le-Rachel vayisa et-kolo vayevk.

יאוַיִּשַּׁ֥ק יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב לְרָחֵ֑ל וַיִּשָּׂ֥א
אֶת־קֹל֖וֹ וַיֵּֽבְךְּ:

|
He told her that he was
Rebecca's son, and thus related
to her father. She ran to tell
her father.
Vayaged Ya'akov le-Rachel ki

יבוַיַּגֵּ֨ד יַֽעֲקֹ֜ב לְרָחֵ֗ל כִּ֣י אֲחִ֤י

וַתַּגֵּ֥ד לְאָבִֽיהָ:

|
When Laban heard the news that
Jacob had arrived, he ran to
greet him. He embraced and
kissed him, and brought him
home. [Jacob] told Laban all
that had happened.
Vayehi chishmoa Lavan et-shema Ya'akov ben-achoto
vayarots likrato vayechabek-lo
vayenashek-lo vayevi'ehu
el-beyto vayesaper le-Lavan et
kol-hadevarim ha'eleh.

יגוַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ לָבָ֜ן אֶת־שֵׁ֣מַע |
יַֽעֲקֹ֣ב בֶּן־אֲחֹת֗וֹ
וַיָּ֤רָץ לִקְרָאתוֹ֙
וַיְחַבֶּק־לוֹ֙ וַיְנַשֶּׁק־ל֔וֹ
וַיְבִיאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ
וַיְסַפֵּ֣ר לְלָבָ֔ן אֵ֥ת
כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה:

|
'Yes indeed, you are my own
flesh and blood,'
said Laban.
Jacob remained with him for a
month.

ידוַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ לָבָ֔ן אַ֛ךְ עַצְמִ֥י

29:15
|
Laban then said to Jacob, 'Just
because you are my close
relative, does it mean that you
must work for me for nothing?
Tell me what you want to be
paid.'

Laban had two daughters. The
older one's name was Leah, and
the younger one's name was
Rachel.

טזוּלְלָבָ֖ן שְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֑וֹת שֵׁ֤ם

|
29:17
|
Leah had
lovely eyes, while
Rachel was shapely and
beautiful.

יזוְעֵינֵ֥י לֵאָ֖ה רַכּ֑וֹת וְרָחֵל֨

|
Third Reading
Jacob had fallen in love with
Rachel. 'I will work for you
seven years for Rachel, your
younger daughter,' he said.
Vaye'ehav Ya'akov et-Rachel

יחוַיֶּֽאֱהַ֥ב יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב אֶת־רָחֵ֑ל

שָׁנִ֔ים בְּרָחֵ֥ל בִּתְּךָ֖
הַקְּטַנָּֽה:

|
'Better I should give her to you
than to another man,' replied
Laban. 'You can stay with me.'

יטוַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָבָ֗ן ט֚וֹב תִּתִּ֣י אֹתָ֣הּ

29:20
|
Jacob worked for seven years for
Rachel. But he loved her so
much, it seemed like no more
than a few days.

כוַיַּֽעֲבֹ֧ד יַֽעֲקֹ֛ב בְּרָחֵ֖ל שֶׁ֣בַע

כְּיָמִ֣ים אֲחָדִ֔ים
בְּאַֽהֲבָת֖וֹ אֹתָֽהּ:

|
Finally Jacob said to Laban,
'The time is up. Give me my
bride and let me marry her.'

ve'avo'ah eleyha.

כאוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יַֽעֲקֹ֤ב אֶל־לָבָן֙ הָבָ֣ה
אֶת־אִשְׁתִּ֔י כִּ֥י מָֽלְא֖וּ
יָמָ֑י וְאָב֖וֹאָה אֵלֶֽיהָ:

29:22
|
[Laban] invited all the local
people and made a wedding feast.
Vaye'esof Lavan et-kol-anshey
hamakom vaya'as mishteh.

כבוַיֶּֽאֱסֹ֥ף לָבָ֛ן אֶת־כָּל־אַנְשֵׁ֥י
הַמָּק֖וֹם וַיַּ֥עַשׂ
מִשְׁתֶּֽה:
|
|
|
29:23
|
In the evening, he took his
daughter Leah and brought her to
[Jacob] who consummated the
marriage with her.
Vayehi va'erev vayikach et-Leah
vito vayave otah elav vayavo
eleyha.

|
כגוַיְהִ֣י בָעֶ֔רֶב וַיִּקַּח֙ אֶת־לֵאָ֣ה
בִתּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֵ֥א אֹתָ֖הּ
אֵלָ֑יו וַיָּבֹ֖א אֵלֶֽיהָ:

29:24
|
Laban had also given his servant
Zilpah to his daughter Leah to
be her
handmaid.
Vayiten Lavan lah et-Zilpah
shifchato le-Leah vito shifchah.

כדוַיִּתֵּ֤ן לָבָן֙ לָ֔הּ אֶת־זִלְפָּ֖ה
שִׁפְחָת֑וֹ לְלֵאָ֥ה בִתּ֖וֹ
שִׁפְחָֽה:
|
|
|
29:25
|
In the morning, [Jacob
discovered that] it was Leah. He
said to Laban, 'How could you do
this to me? Didn't I work with
you for Rachel? Why did you
cheat me?'
Vayehi vaboker vehineh-hi Leah
vayomer el-Lavan mah-zot asitah
li halo veRachel avadeti imach
velamah rimitani.

כהוַיְהִ֣י בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּה־הִ֖וא לֵאָ֑ה
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־לָבָ֗ן מַה־זֹּאת֙
עָשִׂ֣יתָ לִּ֔י הֲלֹ֤א בְרָחֵל֨
עָבַ֣דְתִּי עִמָּ֔ךְ וְלָ֖מָּה
רִמִּיתָֽנִי:

|
'In our country it is something
that is simply not done!'
replied Laban. '[We never] give
a younger daughter in marriage
before the first-born.

כווַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָבָ֔ן לֹא־יֵֽעָשֶׂ֥ה כֵ֖ן

הַצְּעִירָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י
הַבְּכִירָֽה:

|
But wait until this
week [of wedding celebrations]
for [Leah] is over. Then we will
give you the other girl - in
return for the work that you
will do for me for another seven
years.'

|
Jacob complied and completed the
week of celebration for [Leah].
[Laban] then gave him
his daughter Rachel as a wife.

כחוַיַּ֤עַשׂ יַֽעֲקֹב֙ כֵּ֔ן וַיְמַלֵּ֖א

|
To his daughter Rachel, Laban
gave his servant
Bilhah as a handmaid.
Vayiten Lavan le-Rachel bito et-Bilhah shifchato

כטוַיִּתֵּ֤ן לָבָן֙ לְרָחֵ֣ל בִּתּ֔וֹ
אֶת־בִּלְהָ֖ה שִׁפְחָת֑וֹ לָ֖הּ
לְשִׁפְחָֽה:

|
|
29:30
|
[Jacob] thus also married
Rachel, and he loved Rachel more
than Leah. He worked for [Laban]
another seven years.

לוַיָּבֹא֙ גַּ֣ם אֶל־רָחֵ֔ל וַיֶּֽאֱהַ֥ב

וַיַּֽעֲבֹ֣ד עִמּ֔וֹ ע֖וֹד
שֶֽׁבַע־שָׁנִ֥ים אֲחֵרֽוֹת:

|
God saw that Leah was unloved,
and He opened her womb. Rachel
remained barren.

לאוַיַּ֤רְא יְהֹוָה֙ כִּֽי־שְׂנוּאָ֣ה לֵאָ֔ה
וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח אֶת־רַחְמָ֑הּ
וְרָחֵ֖ל עֲקָרָֽה:
|
|
|
29:32
|
Leah became pregnant and gave
birth to a son. She named him
Reuben. 'God has seen
my troubles,' she said. 'Now my
husband will love me.'

יְהֹוָה֙ בְּעָנְיִ֔י כִּ֥י
עַתָּ֖ה יֶֽאֱהָבַ֥נִי אִישִֽׁי:

29:33
|
She became pregnant again and
had a son. 'God has heard
(shama) that I was unloved,' she
said, 'and He also gave me this
son.' She named the child Simeon
(Shim'on).

vayiten-li gam-et-zeh vatikra
shmo Shim'on.

לגוַתַּ֣הַר עוֹד֘ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּן֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר
כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֤ע יְהֹוָה֙
כִּֽי־שְׂנוּאָ֣ה אָנֹ֔כִי
וַיִּתֶּן־לִ֖י גַּם־אֶת־זֶ֑ה
וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ שִׁמְעֽוֹן:

|
29:34
|
She became pregnant again and
had a son. 'Now my husband will
become
attached (lavah)
to me,' she said, 'because I
have given him three sons.'
[Jacob] therefore named the
child Levi.
Vatahar od vateled ben vatomer

ki-yaladeti lo shloshah vanim
al-ken kara-shmo Levi.

לדוַתַּ֣הַר עוֹד֘ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּן֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר
עַתָּ֤ה הַפַּ֨עַם֙ יִלָּוֶ֤ה
אִישִׁי֙ אֵלַ֔י
כִּֽי־יָלַ֥דְתִּי ל֖וֹ שְׁלשָׁ֣ה
בָנִ֑ים עַל־כֵּ֥ן קָֽרָא־שְׁמ֖וֹ
לֵוִֽי:

|
She became pregnant again and
had a son. She said, 'This time
let me praise (odeh) God,' and
named the child Judah (Yehudah).
She then stopped having
children.

להוַתַּ֨הַר ע֜וֹד וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֗ן
